A taxable Roth conversion adds the converted amount to ordinary taxable income. Because federal brackets are marginal, only the portion entering each bracket is taxed at that bracket’s rate.
Federal tax before and after conversion is calculated layer by layer using the 2026 IRS rate schedules. The difference is the incremental federal estimate. The projection compounds balances annually and subtracts the future value of tax paid from outside funds.
For example, a single filer can enter $80,000 of 2026 taxable income and a $40,000 fully taxable conversion. Finly layers the conversion through the federal brackets, adds any flat state estimate, and shows the effective tax rate on the conversion separately from the marginal bracket reached.
The taxable conversion is added to ordinary taxable income and taxed across the federal brackets it reaches. Finly estimates the incremental federal amount plus an optional flat state estimate.
Generally, the taxable portion of a Traditional IRA conversion is included in ordinary income for the conversion year. This calculator assumes the entered conversion is fully taxable.
Enter taxable income after deductions. Finly shows the remaining room in the current 2026 federal bracket before additional conversion dollars enter the next bracket.
